My Own Target Audience
Looking at the research I have done, most music magazines tend to either be mostly read by a male audience or targetted at them so I want to create a magazine that caters for a female audience, but that can still attract the male reader also.
Age: Mostly for the 16-25 year old age group but can also have an open readership
Class: ABC1
Ethnicity: All ethnicities, my magazine is not targetted at a specific ethnicity.
The ideology of my magazine is that indie-style music can be liked by women too and that less well-known artists are important too. Its oppositional to the hegemonic norm for music magazines that tend to proivde content about very well-known mainstream music artists such as Haim, Arctic Monkeys and Florence and The Machine. Therefore my magazine will feature no indie-style bands already recognised widly in the public eye.

Choosing the Name and Genre of my magazine
Genre:
Looking at the responses I received I have decided that my music magazine will be one that provides information and gig reviews about indie-style bands that are not very well known but are similar to existing artists that people interested in indie music will have heard of before.
Name:
To decide on the name of my magazine, I have picked a few possibilities and shared them with my focus group, asking them to pick which one they prefer the most and asking for any other suggestions.
Possible Magazine Names that I presented:
- Emerge
- Introduce
- Intro
- Melody
- Major
- Chord
- Medley
- Pitch
- Suite
When presenting these suggestions, these were some of the responses I received:
The results from this were:
Out of 6 votes,
4 votes for emerge=66.6%
1 votes for suite=16.6%
1 votes for intro=16.6%
From these results I have chosen to use Emerge as the name of my music magazine, which I believe was chosen due to its connection with the genre chosen of small bands 'emerging' onto the music scene. I chose to go with the majority due to the fact that my target audience is aged between 16-25.

Creating my Focus Group
To be able to make important decisions about my magazine, I created a focus group on Facebook Messenger, adding a handful of boys and girls between 16-17 years old informing them why i was making the group and what they were to expect.
Due to having to use a school camera, I decided my focus group could only realisticly be comprised of people my own age because they will be within my target audience so would know what sort of material they would want within a music magazine and what appearance and details would make the magazine stand out for them if they were to see it on newstands with a range of other music magazines.

Different Magazines:

Mark Ellen and David Hepworth founded Q magazine in 1986 because they felt there was a niche market for an older generation who liked to buy CDs, which was still a new thing on the market at the time
It was originally going to be called 'Cue' Magazine but was changed as there were fears it could be mistaken for a snooker magazine, so it was changed to a single letter that would be more prominent on a newsstand.
The Target Audience for Q Magazine is for both men and women in their 30s and 40s who are looking for a more sophisticated way of finding out about 'alternative' style music; that just talks about the music itself and leaves out the details of what the artist is wearing and so forth. However, it seems it does not appeal much to women of that age and has a wide teenage reading audience.

I chose to research this magazine because the genre of my magazine is also indie music although my target audience is younger than the target audience of Q so as an opposite age group, looking at what not to include in my magazine for a younger audience.

NME stands for New Musical Express and is a British music magazine published since 1949. It is largely associated with rock, alternative and indie music and was abbreviated to NME to stand out more on magazine stands and easier to read.
The target audience of NME Magazine is mainly male, aged between 17-30 who want to find out about new music, from a middle and working class background.
The average age of their readers are 25
73% of their readers are male
73% belong to the social grade ABC1
34% work full time
18% work part time
26% full time students

I chose to research this magazine because the genre of my magazine is indie music, the same genre NME is and my target audience is aged between 16-25, which is very similar to the age of NME's target audience. Researching this magazine has given me ideas on what I need to do to attract the same sorts of readers of NME, although NME has a largely male audience compared to my magazine where I would like to have a mainly female audience.

The first issue of Kerrang was released in June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar, Kerrang! was initially devoted to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the rise of hard rock acts. In the early 2000s it became the best-selling British music newspaper.
The target audience is mainly male, aged between 17-24, interested in rock music.

Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO
f-stop(aperture)-an adjustable opening which controls the amount of light coming through. The lower the number, the shallower the depth of field. This will mean it will be wider and you will have a brighter image. It is a camera setting corresponding to a particular f-number, measured in f-stops. A high f-stop like f-22 means that the aperture hole is quite small, and a low f-stop like f/3.5 means that the aperture is wide open. If you shoot with the aperture wide open, then more light is allowed into the camera than if the aperture is closed down to only allow a tiny hole of light to enter the camera.

Aperture/f-stop scale
shutter speed- how long the shutter is open for and therefore the longer the shutter is open, the brighter the image will be. Has an interval of 25, measured in seconds. The bigger the denominator the faster the speed (ie 1/1000 is much faster than 1/30). Most of the time, 1/60th of a second or faster is used otherwise a tripod is needed to reduce blur and still create clear images even with a slow shutter speed. The amount of time that the shutter allows light onto the image sensor is called the shutter speed, and it is measured in fractions of a second. A shutter speed of 1/2 a second would allow more light in, giving it a brighter image.
Shutter speed scale
film speed -its sensitivity to light. Film speed is the measure of a photographicfilm's sensitivity to light, determined by sensitometry (Sensitometry is the scientific study of light-sensitive materials, especially photographic film) and measured on various numerical scales, the most recent being the ISO system. A closely related ISO system is used to measure the sensitivity of digital imaging systems.
